At this point I feel like I did last year as a rookie. I’m showing up not knowing how the car will run or handle. Plus being only the second race of the season I need to get a feel for sideways and fast. I did not make it to any of the practices. I’m coming off of an accident from last race so I hope the car is setup right and the wheels will stay on. |

Also, over the off season I had some engine work done, so I have to find the correct jetting which has to be changed during the week which means it could take 2-3 or 4 weeks to tune them in. It feels good to be back at the track. Racing friends, race cars and roaring engines…it’s so cool. During practice the track was really slippery. I was trying not to hit the rev limiter, which was hitting about half way down the straight away, so I had to only give it half throttle it seemed like. I think it was the first or second lap I was turning into 3 and the car went into a 4 wheel drift right towards the wall…I was thinking…oh man not again, and only in practice too. After a second or two I locked up the brakes and it stopped sliding after about another several yards. I could tell I was going to be ok and I slammed the gas to get the heck out of there. After my heart started again I thought…that was kind of fun sliding around. For the heat I started 7th out of 8. I had a tough class to. I had like 4 or 5 cars that are really good. The first 3 cars took off pretty far and the 5 of us were in a group about a straight away back. I think about half way through the heat which would be 4 laps I passed for 4th place. I could see I was staying the same distance back for a few laps which meant I was running well. I finished 4th. This time I only had to do maintenance, not repairs. That makes for much more fun at the races. I checked my spark plugs and I’m running way lean. That means my jets are to small and not giving the engine enough fuel. I will change them for next week and my car should be running faster. For the main I started 11th out of 21. With in the first lap we had a yellow flag. They kept coming one after another. I think with in about 5 laps I was running in 7th place. The top six would pull away from me a little bit, but I was not getting passed either. I stayed that way for the whole race until the end. Yellow after yellow. I would say we had several. On the last lap I’m going through turns one and two and a car comes in bonsai and hits my left front tire. That hit knocks the steering wheel out of my hand. Man, I hate that. It scares the crap out of me. Imagine sliding through a corner or coming out of a corner and hitting the gas and all of a sudden you’re not steering the car anymore. Last year that happened to me 2or 3 times. Anyway I survive that while a couple of cars pass me because of course I’m off the gas. I finished 9th out of 21. So all said and done not a bad night at the races. Talk to you next week.Jack. |
