In The Driver's Seat  By Jack Haverty May 6, 2006

2nd race of the season and there’s another 32 cars. 8 rookies, including me. I have that thought again…will I make it to the ‘A’ Main? After mud packing, we get called up for Hot Laps. They called us up early. We must have sat there 15 minutes. It’s a good thing I put 2” foam on the bottom of my seat.

When they let us out for practice, they let all 32 cars go at once. It seemed like there were cars everywhere. The track was still slick and there where several spin outs on the 1st lap. Total waste of time.

I’m in the 4th heat and start 5th out of eight. After a couple wrecks and a battle with another 2 cars, I finish 4th…but wait, the winner of my heat is disqualified and that moves me up to 3rd. So not only do I get 2 points for finishing in the top three in the heat but, that puts me as the last car to get transferred directly to the ‘A’ Main….I’M IN! In the Main Event I start 12th out of 18.

Just before I go out, a co – racer tells me to be careful, it’s crazy out there. He was not kidding. The ruff driving was obvious. I think it was in the first two laps, I was in the middle of turn two and I could have swore I was getting hit from all three sides. By the time I got to exit turn two, I lost it and spun to the infield. So now I’m restarting 18th. It’s a long ways to the front.

The track was way better than last time. It was really fast. I don’t know how many wrecks there were, I lost count. I think I avoided about 5 wrecks my self. About three quarters of the way through the race we are under yellow and I’m in 5th place. I’m having a total blast.

I’m racing side by side, sideways, and going really fast. Oh ya, by this time I have only one tear off left. I’m still working on the tear off problems. We get down to the last couple of laps and coming out of turn two the car in front off me has a bobble and the top line opens up. But, all I did was see it, because it disappeared just as fast.

The next lap which is the white flag lap, coming out of turn two that car had the same problem and it reoccurred to me (short memory) when I saw that hole to go for it. My car just seemed to git in there and before I knew it, I was making a move on the outside for 4th place.

I remember when my front wheels were somewhere around his rear wheels, I let of for a split second to make sure he wasn’t going to move up to the top line, then slammed it to the floor. By the time we got to the next turn, I was just shy of door to door. I backed off because I was too high for that speed but still racing for position. Another car went low and passed me.

That’s ok, it was a blast. I finished 6th in the Main Event…but wait, the top two are disqualified. That moves everybody up two spots. When the races are over, some race fans stop by to say high. That’s always fun. My cousins Beau and Cody came by to say hi. What's up Cody!!

Almost all of the cars would be gone after the races but we all stay around and wait for the folks that come back to the pits. We meet a lot of nice people and great kids too.

Talk to you later.

Jack.
